Affordable Places to Live in London

BY Rebecca | 22 April, 2015 | no comments

London is one of the most popular cities in the world. The residents are charming, the air is crisp and cool and there are ton of historical places to visit. However, being the powerhouse city it is, living expenses tend to be pricier. Though, with some general abundance of patience as well as some time dedicated to digging, you may find a gem of a home that will keep your wallet intact.

Here are a couple of the most popular living areas for those on a budget:

Catford

This goes first simply because of what is associated with the name. The name is such due to the infamous black cats that were so often affiliated with witchcraft, burning and throwing into the ford (the shallow part of a river). Though a genuinely dark time, it was also historical and a lot of references are still made in the many faces of media.

You can find this district in South East London, specifically in Lewisham, and will be able to find above decent accommodations in quiet residential areas.

Walthamstow

Arguably one of the best places in London to hunt for a deal in terms of flats, especially if you have the patience to sweep the area for the right price of living.

A lot of young professionals are choosing this place, because of the affordability and great bargains, as well as the easy transport available. You can find a local market, a couple of good drinking and dining places, and a lot of chances to socialize.

Deptford

The River Thames has always been a popular historical spot and a great place to hang out, and south of it has become buzzing with young professionals and fresh graduates. It is arguably one of the cheapest places to stay in London, and is one of the most checked out areas for people looking for a bargain. More than most other areas in London, you will be getting your money’s worth here.

There is decent transportation to be found here, and even if the ride home might not be as easy at night, as of 2015, the tubes are open 24 by 7, allowing for safe travel for night owls.

White City Estate

West London areas are honestly considered more pricey compared to their Eastern counterparts, however, some might prefer to live there and it still deserves a spot on the list. White City Estate is not as well known as areas like Maida Vale, Acton or Perivale, but there are very good bargains to be found here.

As always, bargains are there for those who are willing to look, so take the time out to check the area and sweep the place for good deals. There are a lot of great places to go in the West, and this area will give good access without breaking your bank account.

After finding a general area where you would like to stay, the time will come to get into the thick of things and really look at the properties on your by-now-heavily-crossed-out list. Property surveys London will help in this regard, and details that are almost always glossed over will come into full attention. After taking so much time to find a place to stay, might as well go the extra mile and make sure everything is as good as you thought it would be.
