How to Really Make it in Retail

BY Rebecca | 8 June, 2016 | no comments

Variety is not something that is lacking in the retail world today. Thanks to the industrial revolution and inventions like the internet, there is no limit to what can be made or sold. This presents people with great opportunity to make themselves into anything that they want to be. As long as you have drive, a solid idea, and access to money, you can make anything happen.

If you chose to make retail the outlet you pursue in the realm of business, you’ll be faced with daily choices about what products you’re going to push in your store. You’ll be inundated with choices from what style, to what color, to what brand, to what fabric, to what supplier to buy through. It’s not always easy to make decisions that need to be made and many questions will go unanswered,  but if you’re in the business of retail, here is some advice on how to make it:

Give Yourself Deadlines

The sheer amount of work that needs to be done in retail is underestimated by most everyone on the planet. People think that if you work in retail, you don’t have a real job. You’re just floating around until something better comes up. This logic is nonsense. Retail is competitive. It’s valuable. It’s difficult. If you have a passion for it, it’s crucial that you organize your priorities and give yourself deadlines.

There will be a lot of things that promise to eat up your time, but if you’re diligent with that time and say no to the things that you know are not lucrative to you and your business, you’ll instantly be more successful at meeting your goals.

Choose Your Battles

It’s really easy to micromanage your employees. When you have a vision for how a business should be run you have to crack down at times. What you also have to keep in mind is the fact that not every battle is worth fighting. Consider your current position in the fight as a whole. Are you on profitable ground? Are you fighting uphill? Are there other battles that require more of your time, skills, and attention?

If you want to be successful in retail, you have to learn how to let things go and choose the right battles. Don’t waste time or energy on things that are unimportant in the grand scheme of things.

Give People Things They Haven’t Seen

The world is full of a lot of the same old, same old. Everything is a mock up or imitation of something else. If you want to make it in retail, be the retailer that gives people something they haven’t seen. New product is exciting and stirs people to want to buy immediately instead of letting product sit on the shelves.
