How I Created The Perfect, Productive Home Office

There are pros and cons to working from home. Pro: I can work in my pyjamas, and set my own work hours. Con: There are distractions everywhere. If you can get the balance right, it’s a wonderful way to spend your work day. However, you’ve got to get your office space just right.

It’s up to you to create a space that inspires work. A space that is comfortable, organised, and productive. Whether you’re an entrepreneur or working on a telecommute contract, you need the right atmosphere. It’s not easy to carve out a productive space at home, especially if you haven’t got a lot of room to work with. I’ve recently modified my home office to create the perfect space. Let me share some of my secrets with you.

Invest in a good chair

This is your number one priority. Remember, you’ll spend nearly eight hours a day (or more) in the same seat. You’ve got to make sure it’s comfortable, ergonomic, and pain free. Trust me, I spent the best part of six months sitting on a wooden kitchen chair. My back is less than pleased! Start looking at heavy duty office chairs, and find a style that you like. Most importantly, find one that supports your body in a productive and comfortable way.

Separate your office from personal life

When you’re working from home, there are no managers or bosses to hold you to account. You’re responsible for your own hours, and your own motivation. Now, this is a double-edged sword! On one hand, this freedom is wonderful. On the other, it’s very dangerous. When faced with a mountain of work, you will literally find anything else to do. The washing up, the hoovering, making a cup of tea. Being at home makes distractions ten times more alluring. Keep your office space separate from any home comforts!

Make it fun and interesting

Some people say that you need an empty and clear desk to focus. Others are happy working among a pile of books, papers, and clutter. (Have you ever seen a university professor’s desk?) I happen to think there’s a sweet spot in the middle. You need to surround yourself with stimulation and inspiration. That means putting things around you that you enjoy. Add a touch of your personality to the office.

Lighting

Recent work studies show that lighting has a big effect on productivity. Have you ever worked in a cubicle office with the harsh strip lights? They seem to drain your soul and motivation. Well, it’s backed up by science too. Harsh, unnatural lights have a negative effect on your productivity. Instead, invest in warm, soft lighting, and let in as much natural light as possible.

Manage cables and clutter

I don’t know about you, but there are tons of wires snaking around under my desk. Laptop chargers, phone chargers, USB connectors, hard drives, etc etc. I use a cable tidy to keep them all in place and out of the way. A productive desk ought to be free from clutter which distracts our mind, and draws our attention away from the task at hand.

What tricks and secrets do you use to keep your home office a productive zone?
